SHOPS will vacate the May Day Green block next month to allow for work on the new £4m public library to start.

It is one of a number of key project milestone set out by the Better Barnsley team for the coming months as the town centre regeneration scheme continues to gather pace.

Work on the council’s £50m scheme, which will be pumped up to £100m once private investment is secured for the retail and leisure elements, is continuing to move forward at a rapid rate.

Last week the Chronicle revealed how the council expected to secure an operator by summertime for its multiplex cinema, which council leader Sir Steve Houghton hailed a ‘key piece of the jigsaw’.
