BARNSLEY Council has pumped an extra £1m into care homes across the borough to help pay for the living wage.

As of April 1, the national living wage for workers aged 25 and over was set at £7.20.

Following a review, the council’s ruling cabinet approved an increase of 6.45 per cent in the contribution it makes towards care home fees for people who have been assessed as requiring financial assistance.

This takes the council’s contribution from £376 last year to £401 for long term residential care.
