A MOBILE phone mast has been given the go ahead in Royston despite strong objection from local residents.
Councillors agreed at the planning board on Tuesday that O2 (UK) Ltd could site a new 30 metre mast within the site of Monckton Coke and Chemical Company on Lund Hill Lane to provide coverage to the whole of Royston.
It will have six antennae, two dishes, and an equipment cabin, and will replace the current one at the fire station.
Forty-eight letters of objection were submitted to the council arguing it is irresponsible to allow use in sensitive areas, is unsightly, needs more research and undoes work done to improve the environment in Royston.
Residents also expressed concern about health implications and that networks should consider mast sharing.
