A HISTORICAL monument and a town hall are among £85m worth of assets the council plans to sell off to boost its coffers.

Hoyland Lowe, a listed folly built in 1720 , and Wombwell town hall are included in a 171 strong list of unwanted sites.

Plots of land, garages, houses, shops, offices and ground leases across the town are also set go under the hammer over three years.

Extra staff and consultants are to be employed, at a cost of £438,000, to help with legal and planning issues.

Receipts from the sales have been conservatively estimated at £85.6m after the auctioneers have taken their fees.

The biggest beneficiary of the sell-off will be education: £57m will go to the Building Schools For the Future project to create nine secondary schools.

Of that sum, £30m will be used to reduce the annual sum that the council planned to borrow to pay for the school building works from £5m to £1.3m a year.
