THE SEARCH is on for folk who put community first and make a real difference to their town.
Nominations are needed for the fourth Spirit of Barnsley Awards, a joint project by Barnsley Council and the Chronicle.
There are two categories, one for adults and another for under 21s, and the awards are open to anyone in the borough.
The aim is to reward unsung heroes who give their own time to help others and improve the area they live in.
Last year four adults received a trophy for their community spirit.
John Hallows was responsible for setting up the town’s Neighbourhood Watch network, while Amanda Lowe was credited with saving the lives of some of the drug addicts she counselled in the Dearne.
William Simon delivers papers and does handy jobs for the elderly in Worsbrough and Peter Goodlad has contributed in many ways to sport in the Athersley area. In the junior category there were two winners. Omar Amarov overcome language barriers to become a member of the multicultural youth committee, and Royston High pupil Emily Harding raised funds for an African school which teaches Aids orphans.
