BARNSLEY’S councillors received a 2.2 per cent pay rise in the last financial year and were paid almost £926,000 between them in allowances and expenses - but they still earn less than they did five years ago.

All 63 councillors were entitled to a basic allowance of £10,655 in the year to March this year, which was up from £10,426 the year before. That equates to an annual rise in of £229, or 2.2 per cent.

However five years ago the basic allowance had been £10,975. In response to huge budget cuts from central government, councillors voted to cut their own pay by five per cent, and it hadn’t increased at all until this latest rise.
