VOLUNTEERS who have been running a service for young people in the Dearne for many years have been rewarded by The Queen.

Dearne Kids’ Activity Group is one of only four groups in the Yorkshire and the Humber Region to receive The Queen's Award for Voluntary Service 2007.

“This is a tremendous boost for all the volunteers who have helped in the last 13 years,” said Ian Ball who founded the group.

“They have given up all their time, worked hard and deserve recognition, but it’s all been worth it.”

The awards were founded to celebrate the Queen's Golden Jubilee to recognise and reward outstanding achievement by groups of volunteers who regularly devote their time to helping others in the community, improve the quality of life and opportunity for others and provide an outstanding service.

Dearne Kids became an official group after Ian's enjoyment of family camping extended to include friends and their families. They decided to help local youngsters who didn't have the opportunity to enjoy similar activities.
