A HUGE fire has destroyed a landmark building in Barnsley Town Centre.

The former Chicago Rock night-club on the corner of Pall Mall and New Street was reported to be alight at 5.20am this morning. Fire fighters reported that the building was well alight when they arrived at the scene.

At the height of the blaze there were eight appliances at the scene as the fire raged upwards through the roof space.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.

Westway has been closed, and the petrol at Morrisons. Several pedestrian routes around the town centre have also been closed for safety including Market Street, New Street and Wellington Street.
