OXSPRING star Dann Brook competed in the French Triathlon Grand Prix series at Dunkirk last weekend for the US Vendome team, finishing in 28th place in the sprint distance event against a top class international field Brook had a good start, exiting transition after the 750m swim in nine minutes 35 seconds, and was part of the front bike pack which formed. In wet conditions, Brook performed well on the slippery, partcobbled circuit, completing the 20km bike course in 30.45. He then finished with a 5km run time of 18.26, giving an overall time of 58.46, just over two minutes behind the winner – ex-world champion Freddy Belaubre. Meanwhile, Dann’s up-and-coming 17-year-old brother Dom competed in only his third full Olympic distance triathlon at Windsor last weekend. The teenager relished competing in the senior ranks despite still being a junior for another 12 months. With over 2,500 entries, Windsor is one of the premier events in the UK and the Penistone Sixth Former was up against top UK competition in the showpiece Men’s Elite wave which is to be shown on Channel 5 on Tuesday night. Although he was the youngest competitor, Dom was not overawed in the open water start, more than holding his own as the going got rough. He joined a group of five swimmers just behind the two leaders on the 1,500m swim section in the Thames. Brook completed the 1,500m swim in around 18 minutes and 30 seconds, exiting transition onto the bike in 19.54, well placed in eighth position between the first and second chase packs. However, rather than working alone on the bike, he chose to drop into the second pack, and worked to bridge the gap and bring the two front packs together. At the end of the bike section Brook was in sixth place after completing the 42km course in 1-02.36. At this point, he was just one minute behind the eventual winner, Great Britain international Richard Stannard. After his exertions in the first part of the race, Brook dropped back on the three lap 10k run section, with his time of 44.04 leaving him in 19th place in a total time of 2-06.35. It was an excellent debut at this level, with strength on the final run section improving with age over the coming years.
