A PHOTOGRAPH of children who attended Racecommon Road Junior School in 1949 brought an excellent response. Pupils expressed their surprise, but ‘delight’ to see themselves in the Memories column of the Chronicle. Most had not seen the photograph before, but this was probably due to the fact that school photographs weren't always affordable for most families in the 1940s.

Malcolm Dixon spotted himself as second from the left on the third row from the front. “I recognised the striped jumper I was wearing. I remember my mother knitting it for me to wear for school.”

Hazel Kirk (nee Ormston) was also on the photograph and is sixth from the left on the third row from the back. The photograph reminded her of a number of the children who were in the same class as her. Gwen Corker (nee Senior) also contacted us. She lived in Cranbrook Street, Kingstone when she attended the school.

Elaine Fieldhouse (nee Haigh) remembered the happy days she spent at Racecommon Road school. She has been able to name many of the children as follows: back row, David Strawbridge, Margaret Steel, Glyn Tolan, Robert Prestley, Eric Gledhill, Ian Woodcock, not known, Susan Denton, Elaine Haigh, Judith Binns, Sandra (surname not known), not known.

Next to back row: Kathleen Hayward, Malcolm Dixon, not known, John Dickenson, not known, Billy Cobb, David Drury, Janet Beverley, Janet Morgan, not known, Mike Lowe, not known.

Third from back: Marlene (surname not known), Janet Harrison, Pat Waterhouse, Valerie Walker, Joan Slater, Pam Scarborough, Hazel Ormston, Anne Morton, Noreena Stafford.

Front row: not known, Douglas Appleyard, not known, Michael Rawson, not known, Alan Waddington, not known, Pickersgill, Peter Wilson, Mike Duerden, Graham Varley, not known.

The photograph was submitted by one of the pupils, Janet Strachan (nee Beverley), fifth from the right on the second row from the back.
