HARRY Denton’s football career began as a pupil at Jump Junior School and progressed to playing for the successful Jump United team several years later.

His sister, Pat Bly, has submitted photographs tracking his soccer career which led to trials for Rotherham United.

A mine worker, he made the decision to join the army. He ended up as a Colour Sergeant Major and served in Ireland, Aden, Gibralter and Germany. He was honoured when he received the good conduct service medal from Her Majesty the Queen Mother.

His mother Florence used to send the Chronicle to him when he was serving abroad so that he could keep up with the news.

Harry had been retired from the Army for only two years when he sadly died in 1984.

On one photograph taken in the 1947 to 1948 season he is seen (third from the right on the back row) with his Jump School team-mates. The full line-up was, back row, left to right: Jack Wade (headmaster), Mr Handley, PE teacher). Next to back row: Harold Short, Frank Standish, ‘Two foot’ Hopkinson, Joe Dixon, Harry Denton, Joe Fellows, Frank Bennett. Next to back row: Jack Greenfield, Terry Radley, Frank Horsfield, Harold Bailey, Andrew Swallow. Front row: Eric Claydon, Alvin Smedley.

Another photograph shows the school team after winning the Sylvester Cup on May 28, 1948.

Harry is next seen seven years later with his Jump United team-mates in the 1956 to 1957 season after winning the old folk's cup. He is second from the right on the front row.
