SCHOOLBOY Sam Campbell could be top of his class his next year - and bottom of the class at the same time.

Solo Sam, eight, is the only child on the register at Worsbrough St Mary's church of England school next year.

It officially closes in December but every other pupil has applied for an alternative school for the new year in September. But Sam's mum Avril wants him to stay there to fulfil his grandma's dying wish.

Avril's mum, Alma Grange, attended the St Mary's school in the 1930s and is buried in St Mary's church yard. Avril did not get the chance to attend the school - because it closed for several years when she was young.

She said: "I'm going to try to keep him at St Mary's as long as I can his education is fine and it is going to suffer because of the pressure of moving.

"I did not get the opportunity to go to St Mary's but my mum asked me if I would send my children there.

"She died about nine years ago and it was on of her last wishes."
