TAXPAYERS in Barnsley should not be footing the bill for people from outside the area bringing household waste to Barnsley recycling centres.

That was the message from senior councillor Roy Miller after plans for a residents-only permit scheme at the borough’s household waste recycling centres was approved by council chiefs.

The ruling cabinet members gave the go ahead for the scheme on Wednesday, which will ban anyone who is not a Barnsley resident from using the borough’s four sites in Worsbrough, Smithies, Goldthorpe and Penistone.

That means from April next year only permitted vehicles or residents carrying valid photo ID, such as a driving licence, showing they are a Barnsley resident will be allowed in.
