BARNSLEY’S oldest nature reserve has celebrated its 40th birthday.

Volunteers at Carlton Marsh marked the occasion last Friday with a day of action with others from Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, who worked together to restore an area of the site known as the old school pond.

Clare Cashon, from the trust, said: “The pond had been overtaken by vegetation. Taking advantage of the dry weather and low water levels the team was able to get into the pond to carry out the essential work of removing extensive vegetation.”
