IT’S all change in the town centre this month as more than 20 shops are forced to close or move to make way for the Better Barnsley development.

WH Smith is the biggest casualty of the changes and is forced to close its doors later this month with as yet no plans to reopen elsewhere in Barnsley.

Several retailers will disappear from the town centre altogether, and several jobs are being lost. However the changes will provide for an updated improved indoor market area, and the changes are also seeing several empty shop units brought back into use, including the former GT News, the former Burton/Dorothy Perkins and the former Santander Bank.
