A WEST Melton scout is to take part in the World Jamboree to celebrate 100 years of scouting.

Thomas Richardson, 15, of the 6th Wath St James Scout Group, is one of six from the Rotherham area who are taking part in the event at Hylands Park, Chelmsford, Essex, over two weeks.

“It’s not every day you get to meet people from all over the world and you can only go to a world jamboreee once,” he said.

“We’ll have to set up camps for the other countries and buses will bring them in at one a minute from midnight.”

The UK is hosting the centenary event for 45,000 scouts representing 116 countries as the movement was founded in England.

Thomas, a student at Wath Pope Pius Catholic High, had to go through a rigorous selection procedure and has been attending training camps with his unit for nearly a year. He had to raise £900 as well as supply kit.
