A GAS firm which has been carrying out major works in Shafton has been accused of leaving pensioners in the cold.
Engineers from Northern Gas Networks have been replacing old metal mains with plastic pipes on Poplar Avenue, Hawthorn Way and Meadow Croft - but gas supplies have been affected and elderly residents have allegedly been left without warm water and heating as temperatures plummet.
One pensioner, who lives on Poplar Avenue, told the Chronicle that residents have had to put up with problems since the works started in early December.
“If the works would have happened in the summer it wouldn’t be as much of an issue as it has been,” they said. “I’m a pensioner, like many other people around here, and I think it’s been handled extremely poorly by Northern Gas Networks. People have been left in the cold and it’s just not on.”
Spokeswoman Jade Wardle, from Northern Gas Networks, apologised for any inconvenience residents may have encountered and revealed that its engineers are due to finish in four weeks’ time.
