FEWER than ten per cent of crimes committed in Barnsley have led to appearances before the courts, new Home Office figures reveal.
They show that over the last year more than half of police investigations had been closed with no offenders traced - and in 17 per cent of cases where suspects were traced, no further action was taken because office could not prosecute those suspected.
Barnsley Central MP Dan Jarvis said he was very concerned by the revelations, which showed just over five per cent of criminal incidents resulted in people in court, with another four per cent being dealt with the police themselves - in the way of ‘local resolutions’ and other methods.
Those figures show there were more than 400 such conclusions, where police mediate between offenders rather than prosecuting, drug warnings handed to minor offenders and a handful of fixed penalty notices.
