WINNIE Smithson, for many years known to everyone in Worsbrough Bridge as Winnie Gamble, has celebrated her 100th birthday.
A member of the then large Roman Catholic Kelly clan in Worsbrough Bridge, Winnie met her husband to be Jack Gamble when he, a serving soldier in India, came to Barnsley when on leave with a pal who was dating her sister.
They fell in love and were married in 1939 and lived with her mum Mary Ellen Kelly.
