BARNSLEY MP Eric Illsley has called on the prime minister to help flagging bingo halls.

The smoking ban, limitations on gaming machine prize money and heavy tax have all damaged business and Mr Illsley wants Gordon Brown to assist in finding a solution for the industry.

He said: “Bingo is a popular pastime and for many people it plays an important part in their social life and in their community.

“There are a lot of pressures on the industry at the moment and it is my fear that many, particularly small independently operated venues will be forced to close.”
