PLANS for a food court have been met with objection from cafe workers in the market who say the council wants to dictate what food they sell and take control of crockery and cleaning.
The four cafes in the market hall - Hilton’s, Bailey’s, Kay’s and Freddie and Henry’s - are all moving in March so the Metropolitan Centre can be refurbished.
They will move to Market Parade, in the former semi-open market, for 18 months, but are unsure of what will happen to their businesses after that.
They say council bosses have told them they want to create a food court in the new market, and also use council staff to clean the crockery and cutlery, which the council also wants to provide.
Cafe owners have been told they may also have to bid for a place in the new market as part of the food court.
