THIEVES tunnelled through a wall to break into Brampton Cortonwood Miners’ Welfare.

The criminals ended up costing more in damage to the building than in what they took in the raid on the Knollbeck Lane club early on Saturday.

Club trustee Stuart Henderson said the thieves had used a hammer, screwdriver and metal spikes to work their way through the club’s rear wall.

They made it into the club’s tap room, but came out behind fixed furniture, which they destroyed to get through. They went on to break through the shutters into the bar area, where they took £40 in petty cash from one of the welfare’s social clubs.

They also destroyed the security system back up and cameras, tried to break into a bandit machine and took a card dispenser which had no money in it.
