ELSECAR'S future prosperity has been given a double boost in the space of days with the announcement of new investment of £1.2m and its adoption as a new Heritage Action Zone, to promote its heritage and tourism potential.

The cash has come from the Lottery and will be used to bankroll a collaboration between Barnsley and Rotherham Councils in what the Lottery call "a bold plan".

A new partnership working to improve the quality of life for young people in Elsecar and Wentworth, aiming to capitalise on the heritage and links between the villages, which performed different functions for the Fitzwilliam estate, with new activities based on the "rich heritage stories" of the area.

The objective is to ensure that the considerable amounts of cash spent by organisations like the Arts Council of England and Heritage Lottery Fund feed through to have the maximum impact on job creation and the area's economic performance.
