LANE closures will be in place from next month to allow work to begin on enlarging Birdwell roundabout as part of major improvements to the motorway junction.
The second phase of the A61 Birdwell roundabout at Junction 36 is nearing completion and from the beginning of May, phase three will begin.
A traffic management plan will be in place during the works with southbound lane closures on the Dearne Valley Parkway between Rockingham roundabout and the Birdwell roundabout.
The diversion is necessary to ensure the safety of those doing the work. A pedestrian route between Hoyland and Birdwell will also be affected by a temporary diversion.
Severe delays up to summer time are expected as a result of the diversions and residents and motorists are advised to allow additional journey time through the junction.
It is anticipated the scheme will be completed by the end of summer 2017.
Full details of the temporary traffic and pedestrian route diversions will be available on the council’s website, social media and in the Better Barnsley shop on Cheapside.
A dedicated email address has been set up by the contractor and queries can be sent to a61birdwell@esh.uk.com.
