A POT of £200,000 meant to be used to generate new jobs in Penistone has been left in the bank for ten years by Barnsley Council as the area has struggled with the worst recession in a generation.

The cash was part of a £750,000 package originally set aside to help finance new business units on a site the council had hoped to develop at Lairds Way, also providing a public transport interchange alongside the railway station.

But the local authority does not own the site and while some of the money has been used in the meantime to establish managed workshops in Springvale, Penistone Area Council has been told that £200,000 of the money remains unused.

Councillors were given details by Barnsley Council official David Shepherd, who said: “There is £200,000 to be spent on employment and sustainability.

“There was originally £750,000. Some has been spent on managed workshops in Springvale. This dates back to 2007.”
