A BACKLOG in updating parking machines to accept the new £1 coin means drivers can park for free at Morrisons - but must find the right small change or old £1 coins at other council car parks.
Machines at car parks across Barnsley have still to be updated amid a national backlog for engineers to carry out the works.
A spokesman said Barnsley council still didn’t know when it would be resolved - it could be ‘next week, next month’ - but said the council had been assured it would be before October when the old £1 coins cease to be legal tender.
