Barnsley are set to offer Andy Yiadom improved terms on his current contract as they hope to avoid him joining fellow star defender Marc Roberts in leaving Oakwell.

Roberts, who was captain of his hometown club, joined Birmingham City on a five-year contract last week for a reported £3.5million plus add-ons – two years after arriving from non-league Halifax Town. Roberts had one year remaining on his contract, as does Yiadom who also impressed last season after joining from Barnet in May last year.

The Ghana international full-back, 24, has been linked with a move to Premier League clubs Swansea City and Huddersfield Town, with a bid for him from the Terriers this week described as 'disrespectful' by Paul Heckingbottom.

Chief executive Gauthier Ganaye told the Chronicle: "We are going to offer Andy a new deal. It's never easy when someone has only one year left on his contract but we want to keep him.

"He has got experience in the Championship now and he's a proven player so we would like him to be even more important for us next season."

Head coach Paul Heckingbottom added: "Yids has been really consistent for us and we want to reward him by giving him a new contract. We don't want to keep losing players of that calibre. We want to develop players for our club, not for other clubs."

Heckingbottom said the club had no choice but to let Roberts leave, adding: "Robbo made it clear through his agent that he didn't want to discuss a new contract and when Birmingham met the club's valuation, the deal went through. It's a massive loss because he was our captain and he was great for us. But we have to move on and reinvest that money into signing new players."

Ganaye has confirmed that at least part of the transfer fee will be used to recruit new players.
