THE number of people killed on Barnsley’s roads almost tripled last year according to the latest statistics published by the South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership.

There were eight fatalities on Barnsley’s roads in 2016, up 166 per cent from the three fatalities in 2015, and they represent a fourfold increase since 2014 when just two fatalities were recorded.

There was also a steep rise in the number of serious injuries in Barnsley, 107, which was a 64.6 per cent rise on the year before.

However Barnsley still has by far the fewest people killed and seriously injured across South Yorkshire, and across the county the number of people killed fell by almost 25 per cent overall to 37.
