Barnsley lost their first game of pre-season as Grimsby Town pinched a late 2-1 win on Saturday.

Lloys Isgrove netted for a second successive game but goals at the start and end of the second half earned the hosts victory.

League Two Grimsby had the first real effort on goal but Siriki Dembele's volley dragged wide of Adam Davies' goal.

Alex Mowatt's quick thinking at the other end came close to giving Barnsley the lead but his effort from 25 yards skewed wide of goal.

Sam Jones really should have put Grimsby in front when he was put through with a classy ball from Kamal Ait El Haj but the frontman blasted over one-on-one.

Barnsley's next chance came as a result of a strong run from George Moncur, he played in Tom Bradshaw on the edge of the box and the striker's effort was palmed away by Grimsby goalkeeper James McKeown.

Moncur was influential in creating the opening goal on 38 minutes.

He powered down the left wing and his cross was turned onto the post by Nathan Clarke before Isgrove turned in the rebound.

Grimsby levelled just seconds into the second half. Angus MacDonald was caught out by a long ball and Dembele capitalised to finish beyond Davies.

They were nearly ahead moments later but Sam Kelly's effort was deflected wife of the top corner.

Barnsley responded well with Andy Yiadom going on a solo run before his shot was kept out by McKeown.

Barnsley changed ten of their 11 during the second half and ended up with an inexperienced team on the field.

Stevie Mallan wasted a decently placed free kick, firing his effort over from 25 yards.

Grimsby got the win in the 86th minute with trialist substitute Brandon Robinson turning in from close-range following a corner.
