ELDERLY residents at a Wombwell Nursing Home have managed to stub out their cigarettes after nearly 80 years of smoking.

Catherine Dixon, 93, Winnie Thompson, 85 and Nancy Law, 83 all started smoking in their teens.

Smoking 20 cigarettes a day each, together they would have gone through more than a million and a half cigarettes.

But now all three have managed to stop and said it was easy.

Winnie said: “Sometimes you fancy one if you get a bit worked up but you’ve just got to say no. I would tell anyone trying to quit to just be determined.”

The ladies all said they started smoking at a time when absolutely everybody smoked.

They stopped six weeks ago and have now completed a six week course with nurse Sue Pickering who has been supporting them to make sure they stop for good. The course was set up in response to the smoking ban which took effect last month.

They were presented with certificates on Monday having successfully completed the course. Staff members Dawn Heilds, Janet Bagnall and Jan Stables have also stopped smoking.
