POLICE kept a watchful eye over an event where about 100 car enthusiasts gathered in the town centre at the weekend and collared several drivers for having no insurance - but most who attended kept within the law and just wanted to show off their pride and joy.

Aaron Evans, 19, travelled from Wakefield to stand proudly in front of his modified Volkswagen Scirocco in the Courthouse car park in the rain.

The event, organised on Facebook by a group called Yorkshire Motors, was held without approval of Barnsley Council and police attended to make sure there was no nuisance caused.

Aaron said the event didn’t cause anyone any harm. “It’s just a good way of spending a Sunday evening,” he said. “We like our cars and it’s a chance to share them and talk to others with the same interests.”
