New signing Matty Pearson is confident his versatility will prove useful to The Reds throughout the season.

The former Accrington Stanley man, 24, believes he is comfortable in central defence and in either full-back position.

He has also operated in midfield as recently as last season.

"I am a versatile player and I would say that I am comfortable all the way across the back four. I do not have a set position but I am right-footed. It does not bother me," Pearson said.

"I played about five games in central midfield last season but I am definitely a defender and the manager knows that.

"It works well for me. I have played everywhere and it does not matter where I play I seem to do all right and that is the main thing.

"He (Paul Heckingbottom) has said to me that I shouldn't change how I play. Stick to it and I'll be fine."

Pearson, who is originally from Keighley, has had to work his way back into professional football after being released by Blackburn Rovers.

He impressed at Halifax alongside former Red Marc Roberts before a successful spell with Stanley. He spoke to Roberts before making the move.

He added: "I had all the help of academy football and played since I was a young kid. Everyone has their own route.

"Along the way, unless you're a world-beater, I am sure everyone has setbacks and it's how you overcome them. The best thing is to prove people wrong and do the best you can.
