TWO sisters are appealing to Darton church to do something about the state of the graveyard after it took them more an hour to get to their parents' resting place.

Susan Fearn, 58, and Christine Corbett, 60, used a strimmer to cut through the long grass covering six graves before they reached their parents'. Susan, of Darton Lane, said she and Chrisine are ashamed of the way the church treat their dead.

“It’s heartbreaking when we go down - it’s more of a woodland than a place to lay your loved ones to rest.

“We put flowers on every week but no-one can see them.”

She says the grass at the front of the church is cut but it’s neglected at the back where it is out of view.

“I can’t understand why the church can’t do it - they get people in to do the front.

“I think they should pay someone - there is enough money going into the church.” Churchwarden Michael Egan said the grass is cut by people on community service and by volunteers.

“It’s very hit and miss as to when the probation service come. They do as much as they can.”
