MORE than 2,500 homes in Barnsley are standing empty with more than 300 having been empty for more than three years, information released by Barnsley Council reveals.
The 2,511 empty residential properties include a mixture of both privately owned and social housing.
The figures, released under the Freedom of Information Act, reveal that most of the empty homes - 2,192, have been empty for one to two years.
But another 194 have been empty for three to five years, a further 68 for six to nine years, and 57 have been empty for ten or more years.
Barnsley Council said while it is not illegal to leave a home empty, it is working on schemes which are helping bring empty housing back into use.
