A PROJECT to give nature a home at two Barnsley reserves has won lottery funding to help make major improvements to the sites.
Development funding of £87,300 has been awarded to help the RSPB progress plans to make Old Moor and Wombwell Ings better for wildlife and also improve visitor facilities.
Matthew Capper, RSPB senior site manager for the Dearne Valley, announced the news on the RSPB community blog saying the team now has roughly a year to progress their ideas into fully fledged plans and take those plans back to the lottery to apply for a full grant to deliver the work.
Full details will be unveiled in due course but some of the ideas being worked on include creating new and rejuvenated habitats on Wombwell Ings with the means to bring water on to the site, new breeding islands and better security to reduce trespass and disturbance.
