SENIOR councillors are expected to give their backing a plan to make CCTV compulsory for all the borough’s taxis.
The ruling cabinet meets on Wednesday to discuss a recommendation to give officers the go-ahead to start work on making a formal case to justify the introduction of cameras in all licensed vehicles in Barnsley.
It is part of work being done by the licensing service to look at the merits of improvements made by Rotherham Council - in the wake of the sex abuse scandal - that are not already in place in Barnsley.
Senior councillors will be told: “It is felt that installing cameras in taxis would provide reassurance to both drivers and passengers, and would help to ensure their safety.”
It is understood the costs of CCTV will be paid for by drivers and councillors have been told the taxi trade is supportive of the plan.
