CHILDREN from Royston have sent a petition to the council about "pollution" from Monckton Coke and Chemical Plant.
Sophie Hawcroft, nine, and Pebbles Thirlwell-Wroe, ten, both of Peartree Orchid want the plant to be closed because smoke could be affecting people with health problems and contributing to global warning.
The letter and petition with 35 of their classmates' signatures has prompted Coun Roy Miller to ask to go to school to talk to the children about their concerns.
He said he was pleased the children were interested in the environment and that the council will be working with them to maintain the environment.
Sophie’s dad Graham said the smoke made their windows and cars dirty but also worried him as a parent as to what exactly the children were breathing in.
He said: “It is sad that the kids have to do this kind of thing without being prompted because they are concerned.”
A spokesman for Monckton Coke and Chemical Plant said: “As a responsible and long-established local employer, we take our environmental and community responsibilities very seriously indeed. All of our operations are strictly controlled and monitored by the Environment Agency.”
