In the wake of manager Simon Davey's new contract, Barnsley FC chairman Gordon Shepherd has urged fans to share the journey. The Oakwell chief is hoping to see more fans turn up to 'share the excitement, share the passion and share the journey with us.' The club hierachy are hoping that the stayaway fans will respond. Less than 10,000 witnessed Barnsley’s midweek win over Wolves. Shepherd went on: “Our crowds don’t really justify our progress and current standing in the Championship, which is a shame. Simply, people have to realise that we still rely on the financial input of Patrick Cryne, which we are all so grateful for.”

The club hierachy believe the difference between a realistic play-off challenge and a midtable finish for the Reds is 2,000 fans on the gate. That number of extra supporters, from the start of the season, would have put the club in a better position to compete in the January transfer window. Club benefactor Patrick Cryne said: “Gordon and I have always tried to not ‘over-promise’ the supporters. We have been realistic, done things in terms of affordability. “We feel that as a club we have improved. The support we do get is fantastic and those that came to see us beat Wolves will surely have been delighted with the football we produced. We would like to invite other fans to contribute and join with us.”
