A HOYLAND GCSE student stunned his mates when he turned up for his end of year prom in a big red truck.

While his mates were arriving at Pope Pius School in stretch limos, 16-year-old Daniel Wantling of Bluebell Close, Hoyland Common, pulled up in a Chas Braham and Sons Haulage rig.

He had been off school ill when some of the other kids booked limos, so his parents arranged for the truck to come and drive him to the school as a surprise. Daniel said: “They told me they'd got me a lift but I never expected that.

“I think my friends were more lost for words than I was. They said it was original and it made a change from all the limos.

“The driver thought it was funny as well, and I’d definitely do it again.” Pupils met at the school on Tuesday night before they were taken by coach to the prom's secret location — Tankersley Manor.

Daniel said that he had been disappointed not to be going in a limo but the truck more than made up for it.

Daniel's mother Yvonne said: “He missed out on the limo, and I just thought it would be novel and that he would enjoy it.

“He was absolutely thrilled, and he'll always remember it. There are certain times in your life that you always remember, and that was one. His face was just a picture.”
