A 20 MPH speed limit should be imposed outside every school in Barnsley, the leader of Barnsley Council’s opposition group has said.
Coun Ron Fisher has asked South Yorkshire police for support in his quest to reduce the speed of traffic outside schools. He said: “I cannot perceive that there is a lot of cost involved in reducing the speed limit. It’s a matter of whether there is the will to do it.
“I have asked the police for support in this, because the safety of our school children is of paramount importance. A lot of schools in Barnsley are on main arterial roads.
“I don’t think it is beyond the highways and engineering department to reduce the speed limits outside all our schools.”
Sgt Phil Jenkins, of Wombwell and Darfield Safer Neighbourhood team, said: “I think it’s a very good idea. I’m certainly in favour of that. I’m not sure how practical it would be to do, but in principal, why not?
“Some schools are on very busy roads, so certainly with the schools we’ve got in the Wombwell and Darfield area, I would be in support.”
