A TOWN Centre pub wants punters to go back to black ..... pudding.
The Gatehouse, which has just been named CAMRA pub of the season, is challenging customers to see how much of the delicacy they can stomach in an eat off later this month.
Landlord Robert Rudge hopes the challenge will bring back some of the business he lost when the smoking ban was brought in.
Since last summer Robert has watched takings drop by about a third and even the traditionally busy matchdays are not enough to boost dwindling profits.
He said: "I want to show people that town centre pubs can be part of the community and are here for people to use as a friendly homely place not just somewhere to call in for a quick drink on the way round town.
"I thought this was something a bit different, a bit quirky, something that would get people's interest." As competitors will be working their way through lots of links, Robert is looking for a butcher who can provide the best black pudding Barnsley has to offer.
Especially since he plans to enter the contest himself, "I'll certainly be joining them, I love black pudding."
The event will be held during Community Pub Week, beginning on February 16. Butchers and contenders can contact Robert on 282394.
