ELDERLY residents and people without cars in Penistone are struggling to get to Barnsley hospital because there isn't a direct bus.

Non-drivers are being forced to take taxis to avoid the hassle of catching one bus to Barnsley and then another to the hospital.

But it has become a financial burden, particularly for residents on pensions, so they are now calling for the restoration of the direct bus withdrawn in 1999.

Jane Brennan, warden at Pendon House, Penistone, where all residents are OAPs, said: "With all the cut-backs in ambulance services, anyone who goes to hospital has to take a taxi which for pensioners is expensive.

"It is a particularly big problem for the elderly. A direct bus service needs to be restored."

Jack Jubb, 87, of Wentworth Crescent, Penistone, says it is a nightmare making two visits a day by bus.

He said: "It is difficult because you have to get four buses to get there and back. The old bus was perfect for getting to the hospital, especially if you make two visits a day."
