HOME helps who care for the town's most vulnerable old folk are not turning in for work because they have not been paid.

Wages for the 30 staff at the Barnsley branch of Aaren Care are almost two weeks overdue and some carers cannot afford to put petrol in their cars to visit pensioners who are unable get out of bed or cook for themselves.

The council pays the agency £10.27 an hour for every carer it sends out but staff, many of whom are single parents, say the elderly are suffering because of the way the firm is run.

It is not the first time staff have had this sort of prolbem; in August and September last year wages did not go into bank accounts. When replacement cheques were issued they bounced and a number of workers refused to work until they were paid.
