PLANS for 160 flats in a town centre high pollution area have been refused by the council.

Developer AMK Land wants to build the large residential development on Freemans Yard, between Doncaster Road and Harborough Hill Road.

According to the planning report, Harborough Hill Road is "a major source of noise and air pollution". The report states: "The proposal would introduce residents of the development to air pollution concentrations greater than the government's health based annual average air quality objective.

"This would create a legal obligation on the council to create an air quality management area (AQMA) and formulate an action plan containing methods to reduce air pollution."
