A KIRK BALK pupil will be anything but making up the numbers when he takes on Europe's top young mathematicians.
Daniel Anstess, 14, of Millmount Road, Hoyland, qualified for the competition after achieving top marks in a nation-wide competition.
The year 9 pupil outscored thousands of budding Einstein's from about 250 schools in the UK Intermediate Maths challenge.
Daniel will be only the second ever pupil to represent the school at the next level and achieved one of the top scores in the country with his problem solving skills.
Maths teacher Richard Whitfield said Daniel performed well above the average 14-year-old.
He said: "He's done exceptionally well. He got the second highest score in the school and only missed out by one mark.
"Daniel's only in year 9 and was competing against children from year 11. I'm sure he'll continue to do well in the next round."
Now Daniel hopes to get the same result when he competes against European children at the next stage in April.
