A CHARITY set up by Dickie Bird raised more than £130,000 to help poor kids play sports but only gave out £7,800 worth of grants.

The Chronicle can also reveal that the Dickie Bird Foundation is trying to claim back about £50,000 from its former chief executive Keith Harrison who resigned in 2006, two years after the charity was set up.

The information is contained in documents the foundation registered with the Charity Commission.

Accounts show that more than £120,000 was spent on putting on events and other costs for running the foundation, including £13,500 for unspecified consultancy fees.

Almost as much went on travel and entertaining expenditure as it did on grants.
