THE fight against knife crime in Barnsley will now focus on enforcement action after a successful bladed weapons amnesty.

A total of 377 items were surrendered at police stations in the borough during the nationwide amnesty, which ended last Friday.

They comprised 272 domestic knives, 17 non-domestic knives such as meat cleavers, and 36 other weapons including switchblades and swords.

Officers in Barnsley also received two handguns and a defused hand grenade.

Insp David Owens, organiser of the amnesty in South Yorkshire, said officers would now concentrate on tackling people who still insisted on carrying knives.

He said: “The amnesty was more aimed at youth culture and young people who carry them either for self defence or through peer pressure.

“They have had their chance to put their knives in the bin, so now we will concentrate on enforcement with things like stop and search."
