DARTON High is being kitted out with a new gym suite which will open to the public after school.

It has secured £100,000 for new equipment from the New Opportunities Fund distributed by the National Lottery.

It has signed a contract with Barnsley Premier Leisure, which runs the Metrodome, to manage the gym suite in the after school sessions on opening in June.

The new equipment will be housed in the current gymnasium, built last year. Facilities at the 30-piece gym will include cardiovascular and weight training equipment, a fully-equipped dance studio, running, rowing and stepping machines and a stretch area as well as an Astroturf pitch.

Aaron Kirkwood, marketing manager for Barnsley Premier Leisure, said it will only take over management of the gym, and the jobs of staff are safe.
