PLANS to build 51 industrial units in Wombwell could help bring the town out of a '15 year doldrum' and bring new jobs to the area.

The former council depot on Ings Road was sold at auction to Swiss company Bickmore Finance Ltd for £0.75 million.

Plans include 49 industrial units which are 'suitable for new businesses to 'establish and or grow' and two, two storey units at either end of the site.

Coun Trevor Smith said: "Wombwell and Darfield have been decimated areas since the pits closed and 5,000 miners were made redundant.

"Things are just starting to pick up again and anything that could generate new industry will help Barnsley as an area in general."

The proposed scheme will cover 9,022 square metres and include a car park with room for 160 cars, 49 light goods vehicles, three disabled parking and 12 cycle bays.

A spokesperson for Bickmore Finance Ltd, said: "The design and lay out is effective in terms of use and space and meets highway requirements. The site to be cleared is a site previously used for industrial purposes and storage."
