HOYLAND town centre will undergo a massive transformation by 2011 if plans for a health complex get the go-ahead.
The town hall would be knocked down along with the Co-op supermarket, G and T Bar, Factory Outlet shop and library as part of the regeneration project by Barnsley Community Solutions, the council and the PCT.
The LIFT centre would contain a health centre, pharmacy, shops and offices on the site of the current car park at the back of town hall. Details of the latest plans were announced at the area forum meeting on Monday and got a mixed response from the public.
Andy Turner, 44, of Stonehill Close, was worried the new centre would increase traffic and parking problems in Hoyland. He said: "If they're building on the one big car park in Hoyland then they'll be nowhere for people to park. If people are wanting to go to a health centre then most will drive to it.
"There's not a day goes by without traffic stopping because someone's blocked off the road. And why are they knocking something down that's only been up for 30 years. It'll happen again in the next 30 years."
Ken Owen, landlord of the G and T bar, said he felt the proposals had 'shafted' him and his wife Amanda. He said: "We've just spent around £20,000 refurbishing the place because we fully expected another lease and now they're just going to knock it down.
"We've had meetings with the planner and spoke to the brewery and they told us nothing would happen for five years. They've just told us lies all along the way."
But Coun Steve Sylvester believed the project would be beneficial . He said: "The design proposals are bigger and better than any of the other centres in Barnsley and for Hoyland to be getting it is positive for the area."
The group will be outlining their business case to Barnsley development agency, Yorkshire Forward and Coalfields regeneration next month.
